Activism

"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."

- Thomas Jefferson

While we have different views regarding global issues and their successful resolutions, I think we can all agree that there are problems in the world that must be addressed. Merkaba reminds you that each individual has the power to make changes in the world, beginning in your own small sphere of influence. If every person reaches out, the overall effect will be dramatic.

A common issue with activism is that the problems at hand seem insurmountable; poverty, war, racial discrimination...and we simply don't know where to start. Not everyone is a Martin Luther King, Jr., or a Nelson Mandela. People are overwhelmed and choose the path of dissatisfied apathy, ultimately accepting the status quo. Please remember that you can be an activist without protest marches and chaining yourself to a bulldozer! You can simply make choices in your daily life. To help illustrate this point, we have identified three main ways that you can cast your vote for change:

Vote with your vote - Participate in elections. Find out about the candidates and make informed decisions based on your beliefs. Vote with your wallet - Perhaps the most effective form of voting, since you do it every day. Where you spend your money shapes the world like nothing else. Vote with your voice - Encourage people to act. Attend meetings. Help proliferate information about key issues, and win people over with your ideas. Merkaba will not tell you what to think or what to believe. We will tell you about some of the issues that we think are important and what we hope can be done about them. Hopefully these will give you some ideas:

Ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

These invasions were irresponsible from the start and, most tragically, resulted in countless civilian and military deaths. The wars helped increase the federal deficit to previously unimaginable figures. Neither Osama bin Laden nor any of the purported "weapons of mass destruction" have been located despite years of searching. As a result, the United States has lost considerable face amongst nations. This damage can never be undone. To avoid further loss of life, it is time to call it quits. At that time, millions of dollars could be applied to other problems.

* Vote for anti-war representatives in the House and Senate. Detailed senate voting records can be found here , but for more broad information on a specific official, try Wikipedia .
* Write your existing congressmen and tell them to vote against extending the wars and to demand a firm schedule for complete troop withdrawal. Contact information to all of the members of congress can be found here .

Total Abolition of Torture

The fact that there is even a debate surrounding this issue is disturbing. ALL forms of physical torture - including waterboarding - are abominable as well as illegal under international law. Any effort by the U.S. government to exploit the exact phrasing of the laws ("detainees?") to justify ignoring prisoners' basic human rights is equally abominable and should bring shame to every American.

* Write to your senators and representatives and demand better oversight of the military's detention system, as well as a thorough investigation of existing reports of prisoner abuse.

Establish Universal Health Care

Of all the things we ask of our government, one would think that the health and well-being of its citizens would be a priority. The majority of western European nations (Germany, Sweden, etc.) and Canada have established, functioning social health care systems regulated by the government. Meanwhile, the existing American system makes it lucrative for insurance companies to deny people coverage as often as possible, and for doctors to prescribe as many medications as possible. Profit motived health care - life and death issues - is hugely unethical. How much is your life worth?

* Write to your elected officials and insist that the groundwork be laid for nationalization of the health care industry.
* Do not back down to insurance companies. If your health care provider is unfairly denying you coverage, don't give up. Keep calling, show up at their office, sue if you can afford it. The companies are betting that you will eventually forget about it, and if that happens in only encourages them to cheat more people.
* Explore alternative and preventative medicines. The use of herbal remedies, acupuncture, and holistic techniques are economical and philosophical alternatives to the existing health-care system, and worth exploring. A healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, sleep, and regular exercise can do wonders to prevent the necessity for medical attention.
* Do not take medicine unless you really need it. Many pharmaceuticals are used recreationally, which results in individuals taking drugs prescribed to others and exceeding recommended doses. Additionally, the more drugs sold, the more money funneled into the existing system, which ultimately drives up premiums for more responsible people.

Reformation of the Federal Reserve Banking System

In 1913, The Federal Reserve Act was passed through Congress and signed by President Woodrow Wilson largely in response to the Panic of 1907. It was thought, at that time as in all times, that a Centralized Bank (much to the order of the "Bank of England") would be able to stabilize the currency against the ravages of inflation/deflation by controlling the interest rates by which banks lend money to individuals and businesses. Sixteen years after the inception of this "private within the government" institution, the stock market crashed and was one of the principle causes of "The Great Depression." In principle, this Bank sounds like a good idea. In practice, it is a flawed organization that operates outside of the bounds of Congressional oversight and ultimately controls the value of YOUR money without having to answer to YOUR government. The Bank's policies and practices are determined by a Board of Governors that makes transactions in the billions of dollars with Foreign Governments and Centralized Banks. This panel operates behind closed doors with little to no Congressional oversight dictating policy that affects every individual's pocket book.

"If Congress has the right under the Constitution to issue paper money, it was given to them to be used by themselves, not to be delegated to individuals or corporations."

- President Andrew Jackson

"Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws."

- Mayer Anselm Rothschild (of the Rothschild Banking Family)
* Research H.R. 1207 and S 604 (House and Senate Bills, respectively.) and write your congressmen/women to support the effort in auditing this "private within the government" institution.

Drug Law Reform

A significant number of prisoners throughout the country are incarcerated for non-violent and mostly drug-related offenses. Focusing on the rehabilitation of drug addicts and reducing or eliminating mandatory prison sentences for non-violent crimes will not only moderate the expense of jailing so many people but will add able bodies to the nation's workforce. In addition, law enforcement resources that are used in pursuit of non-narcotics (such as marijuana) could be reassigned to fight organized crime.

* Write to your state representatives and ask for drug-law reform. Demand that new cases be treated with increased leniency and that existing inmates be paroled or put in work programs.
* Write to your federal representatives and demand that the resources of the FBI and DEA be redeployed to further prioritize the fight against organized crime and narcotics trafficking, while de-prioritizing non-narcotic drug cases.

Abolish Death Penalty

Whether you believe that someone can commit a crime so heinous that the death penalty is needed is irrelevant. The issue is that the justice system in this country is a flawed organization, composed of humans capable of making mistakes. Such a system should not be granted such absolute power over someone's very life. False convictions have occurred in the past, and despite improved investigative techniques will invariably happen in the future. No margin of error is acceptable when a person's life is at stake.

* Contact your state government and express your views on death penalty abolition!

Reduce Poverty

It is probably safe to assume that if you can view this webpage, you can feed yourself. Hunger and homelessness are major issues around the world, including America. Food and shelter are basic needs that every person should have, and a small sacrifice in your own life could make a big difference in someone else's.

* Donate to charity organizations. All will accept cash, and some will accept clothes and other goods. A few will even pick your donation up from your house. As a bonus, most charity donations are tax-deductible.
* Support local relief organizations. Community food banks and homeless shelters address problems at street-level, so you'll see the results in your own backyard.
* Volunteer your time. Your own labor is both your most valuable and your most honest asset, so be generous. Many charity organizations depend on volunteer workers to distribute literature or collect donations while some, such as Habitat for Humanity use volunteer labor to construct homes for underprivileged families.

A Less Corporate Landscape

The number of privately-owned businesses in this country is shrinking rapidly, devoured by corporate giants such as Wal-Mart, et al. By supporting large corporations, you are discouraging entrepreneurship and making it harder for unique products to reach the marketplace. Some American cities (like Austin, Texas, or Los Angeles, Calif.) have diverse local economies and can be used as models for the rest of the nation. It is also worth mentioning that the current health-care system is stacked against independent business owners since, for most people, the only way to get health coverage is to work for a corporation.

* Support local businesses. While large corporations can offer the best prices on most items, buying local both keeps money in the regional economy and encourages diversity and creativity in the marketplace.
* Push for-health care reform. Until the current system is revised, most people need corporate jobs with health coverage, which makes it difficult for independent businesses to get good workers.
* Work in a small business. Be a part of something that you can really get involved with and take pride in. Some do actually offer health insurance, and if not there are some individual options available to you.

Embrace Green Technology & Preserve Natural Habitats

It is pretty obvious to everyone by now that the vast majority of the earth's natural habitats have already been destroyed. Even the oceans, unpopulated by man, have had wildlife reduced by 90% as a result of fishing and pollution. Meanwhile, fossil fuel reserves are being steadily depleted and will invariably run out at some point. Unless we want our grandchildren to live on a desert planet, we must change. Carbon emissions must be reduced drastically and renewable energy sources must be tapped. Existing natural wildlife habitats MUST be preserved and efforts should be made to restore damaged habitats.

* Recycle! This is the simplest way to change the face of the world when it comes to consumer waste. It is also one of the easiest ways to participate in global change. If your community does not offer recycling services, petition your local governments to adopt the practice. If your community does offer these services, sign up! In most cases, a truck will come to your home, handling all the dirty work.
* Vote for eco-friendly government officials. Environmental issues are decided both on state and federal levels so be sure to vote for both!
* Write to your existing officials and tell them to block government actions that would destroy natural habitats. Also encourage increased land allocation for refuges and parks and funding for re-population of endangered species. Finally, tell them to fund research into sustainable, clean energy and to assist companies that are working on these technologies.
* Buy green. This could mean a lot of things, such as driving a hybrid car, eating some pesticide free vegetables, or wiping your face with a recycled paper napkin. It could also mean making your home more energy efficient, or putting a solar panel on the roof. Oftentimes it is more expensive to buy environmentally friendly products, but it is a worthwhile investment for the future.
* Reduce waste. Although in America most people can afford to order a large fries and only eat half of it, it is ultimately a squandering of a resource that could have gone somewhere else. The same is true for owning, say, a Cadillac Escalade. So whatever your economic standing is, you could do some good (and probably save some money) by only buying what you actually will use. This will free up resources for other things and reduce prices on goods, making them affordable to more people.
* Donate to environmental conservation charities. Choose your cause from any number of worthwhile efforts: whales, rain forests, etc. You can also donate to research in alternative energy and other green technologies.

A postscript from a dear friend...

"Trust your inner/higher self. Listen. Do the Right Thing.

...It has already been programmed into our DNA, we have just forgotten how to listen to it. The answers and the will are already within us. It's time to remember. We must forget who we think we are. Whether you believe it or not, it matters not. You do not need to believe, those of us who planted this information within us millennia ago knew it, and knew we would eventually forget how to remember and access this information. They planned for it. To save our planet and ourselves, there is no need to 'figure out' how to solve our issues. Our ancestors have already done this. They foresaw us as a race getting to this point in and not knowing how to fix it. And 'they' that I speak of is really you and I. Music is the gateway to this information and will. Music is the Hammer."
